What Kind of Impression Do You Make on Those Closest to You?

It’s an honorable way to be remembered, and a stark reminder about what really matters most to me at the end of the day – my relationships with people. That is what comes to the forefront when I reflect on both work and life.

It’s easy to get caught up in trivial day-to-day activities, especially at work. Exciting projects and new opportunities come and go. But I’ve realized that what keeps me going are the people that surround me. It’s the primary reason I’ve worked for the same company for the last 10 years, even after moving half-way across the country.

We talk frequently about influence in public relations. Sometimes we forget that the most important people we influence are our own colleagues and peers. When I think about the mentors that have influenced me over the years, the thing I’ve always appreciated is that they make people a priority in spite of their hectic schedules. They will always make time to stop, listen, teach and advise.

We’re all feeling crunched for time, running around stressed out that we haven’t been able to do X or finish Y. I do that constantly. Instead of being so hard on myself, next time I’ll try to stop and ask “yes, but who did I help today?” That’s what people will remember the most.
